bulletSpecify locks for new construction.  This is one of the most difficult parts of the job.  It takes many hour over many months, and requires contact with contractors, department chairs, campus facilities, etc.  The process is as follows:
bulletSpecify hardware in advance of final specification date.
bulletObtain plans and hardware schedule for the building.
bulletFind every door (whether lockable or not) on plans and hardware schedule  make sure they match, and ensure that there's no conflict with intended function or life safety codes.
bulletEnter information for each door into database.  Database fields include architectural room and door numbers, department, room function, possibly schedule page number.  Database is indexed by architectural room number and architectural door number.
bulletDetermine room assignments by department.
bulletConfer with departments regarding the way they want the rooms keyed.
bulletSet up keying schedule based on department requests.
bulletEnter into database.  Field entered is "master", and is indexed by that.
bulletPrint out two listings, by room and by master, and send to keying vendor.
bulletRequest departments provide listings of rooms and names of occupants for key issue.
bulletObtain final room numbers from Campus Facilities.
bulletEnter them into database while checking to see that there are no conflicts.  Index on room number.
bulletPrint out database of all information; one indexed by room number, another indexed by architectural door number.  Provide blank space to check off when final core or cylinder is installed.
bulletReceive final cores or cylinders, and check for completeness and correctness
bulletDecide on hook numbers for new keys, and place one manufacturers' cut key on each.
bulletCut and issue keys as requested by departments
bulletInstall cores or cylinders as college gains beneficial occupancy.
bulletObtain building keys not part of master system (such as fire alarm panel keys, cabinet keys, etc.), and assign hook numbers to each, making sure there are no duplications.  Issue as determined by key requests.
bulletDeal with inevitable room-department changes after everything was specified and completed.

bulletRosenthal bells and clock
bulletThis is not a trivial job!  The obvious parts were keeping the clock on time (within a minute) and making the bells strike appropriately.  The job further stretched to changing the bell program for a more accurate strike, and replace the bell computer when it failed after eight years of continuous service.  The master clock also has to be programmed with all holidays and days when there are no classes (since the local community objects to the bells during non-class days).  There was one occasion when a clapper assembly had to be removed for service (because of binding of the clapper) and replaced, which required that I be suspended by safety belt outside the circular stairway to remove and reinstall the assembly (about eight stories up). Pictures of the bells here.
